Actually, I found out today that my Xp version is only an upgrade for Windows 98..which means I will have to buy the full version, which I am assuming is more tha 100 bucks, which is more than I can spend right now.

There is no such thing as " Xp version is only an upgrade for Windows 98". Your copy is a simple XP Home or Pro upgrade disc. When the install asks you to provide proof of an existing Windows install, all you have to do is place a copy of Windows 98, Windows 2000 Pro or even Windows Me in the CD ROM and hit return, After you do this, the XP install will continue normally |

Shopping around can get you a legal copy of WXPH OEM for as low as $64 and an average of $82. Some places, if in academics or volunteer non-profits, you can get the academic version for $84. Windows XP Professional is being sold many places for $132 with a VISTA compon, and that price will go up. You might be able to work a trade with somebody for part cash.

oh..ok...that is helpful...So, if I go to wal-mart and buy the $99 Windows XP Upgrade program, it will work the same as the full, as long as I have the Windows 98 CD?

Actually there are XP upgrades that will only work with 98 and W2K, and will not work to upgrade ME... one of the strange things I have seen Microsoft do. They are generally tied into corporate and academic accounts, and were not sold as such.

Another question:
I was talking to someone at work who is somewhat familiar with building computers. He said I may need to replace my ram as well. That usually when a motherboard fries, it takes out the memory sticks. Is this so? |

My emachine is back up and running. Thanks to all of you for your help.
A guy my husband works with does their companys' computer work. He fixed mine for just parts cost @ the companys' cost. He got a Asus A8V-VM SE motherboard that works with my cpu chip. All is working great now. Thanks again. |

Is it my motherboard or is it my new Power Supply
I had a power outage a few days ago and after that I could not start my e-machines computer. It doesn't even turn on! So being thrifty I went to tiger direct and ordered a new power supply and cpu fan. They came quick enough but when I replaced them I still get absolutely NO power to the system. So my question is, would a faulty motherboard cause NO power or do you think I got a "bad" new power supply?
This is my second e-machines, the first one lasted forever with no issues, but this one is only 1.5 years old! A new motherboard is $160 from e-machines and if I have to replace that I may as well buy a new computer! |

My sentiments exactly. I have literally stopped working on them here. The last one I repaired had three issues-Power supply, mobo, and cd-rw drive. I had done a lot of work to this particular computer and out of the clear blue; the machine started up on its own and blew out the power supply and the mobo. Sorry piece of junk. In most cases; I recommend that the customer gut the mobo and power supply and buy a copy of xp as others have suggested. However, since most customers want to take the cheap way out, one might as well be talking to the wall in most cases. When they ask me to repair an E-Machine; I give them the worst case scenario so customers will know what to expect in advance with no surprises.

I had the same problem as you, and I had my warranty in effect at the time, but when it was diagnosed as a Windows Failure. |

If these emachines are both out of warranty, you are really out of luck trying to sue. Gateway owns eMachines now. Just gut the systems re-using only the case and build decent computers using new motherboards, power supplies, memory and CPU

All eMachines (Gateway) has to do, is honor the warranty. If I bought an eMachines, I would immediately replace the power supply
