How to Read a Sony Handycam DVD-R

I've got a couple of DVD-R from as Sony Handycam that a friend of mine gave me but I'm unable to read it in my laptop or dvd player. Any ideas????

I believe the Handycam uses a proprietary coding on the DVD-R writing, so they won't play on anything else
