missing file hal.dll

Does anyone know if I will lose data if I use the following repair options that I found on the Microsoft website?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314477

I tried to reboot from the CD and follow the instructions from this thread http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic8356.html

but I don't get the repair option of the existing windows installation, but only the different partitions on my hard drive.

if you're really missing the HAL, then it should be on the OEM CD.
Boot it and perform a REPAIR

I have tried that but it wouldn't give me the option to chose my operating system... in the recovery console, it only says C:\>
