How do I open ."rar" files

I have down loaded a file exstention .rar I now realise that winzip does not open these files. Please could you advise me on how you open these files.

Open RAR files

do a search for ALZIP, it is a free program and works a treat, from memory I think it is www.altools.com

7zip is a free open-source alternative that handles most formats and (most of the time) beats ACE and RAR compression.
