Hi guys, hope someone can help me on this - I currently use an Asus A7N8X-X mobo and some months back decided to route the mobo's audio through the computer cases front panel - in order to do this, I had to remove two jumpers from the front panel audio connectors but heres the rub - having just bought a 5.1 speaker set, I need to disconnect the cases front connectors to enable the three rear 5.1 connectors to work, I need to reinstall the two jumper pins to the mobo's front panel connectors to enable the rear connectors but the user guide does'nt indicate what the jumpers default position should be on the 9 pin audio array - can any a78nx-x owners tell me which pins they are connected to?

It would be better to simply install the two 512mb sticks, 1 stick in DIMM-Slot 1 or 2 & the 2nd stick in DIMM-Slot 3 (furthest from the socket).

When you don't have the same amount of memory on each channel, it causes a performance decrease. It's up to you to see if you really need that extra 256mb of Ram over the 3 / 5% performance increase a proper DualChannel setting can bring.

ALso the 1gb of ddr is the one you mentioned is not good but i haven't had any problems does it eventually occur?

Also if i put 1gb in the 1st channel would putting the 256 make my computer run as if it was slower then the 1gb?

Ugh, im almost embarresed to ask this, but im getting desperate.

This is my first board by Asus, ive always used Abit boards. After some bad experience with their RMA people, I just bought a A7N8X-X.

My problem is that I cant get it to power up. Ive got the big ATX connecter in, but theres a tall four pin connector whose slot I cant find. Its in a square shape, and always went right next to the ATX when I used the Abit boards. Everything else as far as I can tell is plugged in, so I have no clue why this thing wont power on.

Any ideas what im not doing right? Any ideas where this connector should go? Thanks for any help

the asus doesnt use the 4pin connector. i found this a bit odd aswell, but apparently they can take all their power straight from the standard connector.

does it do anything at all? is there a green LED when you switch the power supply on? if not try exchanging the power supply for another one that is known to work.

hope that helps

There is a LED lighting on the board when I turn the PSU on, but the PC itself wont boot. I press the power button and I get nothing. At this point I dont know what to do.

Thanks for the help though, its definatly gotten rid of one of the bigger bits of confusion

have you tried removing the battery to clear the cmos? what have you got connected to the board at the moment?have you tried unplugging everything except the graphics card to see if the bios will come up?

another thing (sorry if you find this insulting), is the board shorting on anything on its underside?

I havent tried clearing the cmos, ill try that.

Ive got just the basic components (vid card, HD, proccesor, one optical drive) and then some of the front panel connectors. Ill also try unplugging everything except the card.

Dont worry about insulting me, im aware of my limited knowlege, and any possible help is appreciated. I have checked under there, and I dont see anything it could be. Thats actually what happened to my last board. A screw somehow got knocked down there, and shorted the AGP.

Thanks again.

The problem has been solved (sorta.)

For some reason the connector for the power button doesnt work. I asked at a store thats semi-nearby, and they said try putting the reset into where the power button would normally connect. Its a pain, but it works. Turns out that the reason for the new MOBO was wrong to begin with, but thats another story...

Thanks for all your help

EDIT: Sorry about the double post, my usual messege board has a time limit on edits . Im not used to adding things in hours after I post it

You can use as many Y connectors on fans as you'd like, as long as your power supply is up to par. Anything under 300W is iffy at best with today's power hungry video cards, cpus and ram amoung others.

Fans don't require much power, just a few watts.

'hmm i should be good then.... i have a 459 WATT power supply running, but I am still thinking of using a Fan controller to have an overview over the temp and the noise level.. even though it is really quiet right now (running three fans one of the power supply directly).. and the temp has been ok so far as well.. so i will see. Thanky for your input!

BIOS updating

There are two ways of flashing your BIOS. If you are a Windows user (W98/WME/W2K/WXP), you can download a utility called ASUS Update (5.30.01 available HERE) which will allow you to update your BIOS while Windows is running. You can either ask it to backup the current BIOS file, download the latest BIOS file available or update the BIOS via a file already on your hard drive.

If you do not feel confident in flashing your BIOS through Windows, there is still the old DOS method. You will need a DOS Bootdisk which you can find HERE. Once you've created a bootdisk with CD-Rom support, the easiest way to proceed is to create a bootable CD with Nero, ask Nero to use A: for the bootdisk & then add the BIOS file you've downloaded on the CD along with the Award Flash utility (version 221 available HERE). Once you've booted on your new CDRom, simply change the working directory to the CD (something like cd x: where X: is the cdrom should do) & then you just need to type aflash & follow the instructions. Remember to backup your current BIOS before updating with the new file.

Problem With My Asus A7N8X-E Mobo

New guy here was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same problem as me and may be found a solution as its not covered in this thread. I have a xp 3000 (333fsb) with a GForce Fx 5900 xt 128mb and 1Gb of Ram (2*512 in dual channel). The problem is while running any full screen application like a game it will reset to the desktop after about 30 mins to an hour but it does not do this when running windowed applications like win amp and power dvd. it will very occasionaly completly reset as if someone has pressed the hard reset button. Many friends have tried to solve the problem by updating drivers and rolling them back ect. The only solution that gave a stable system was to set the multiplier at 12.5 (2.5Ghz). Can any one please suggest the bios settings i should be using or where im going wrong. Could it be a bad chip as it experienced a similiar (though im told not the same, somthing to do with a registry left open) problem on a ASRock K7 board as well. This is what promted the replacement. Games that do this the most are planet side, unreal 2004 and far cry.

solution to problem above

Using the memory timings found earlier in this thread i have found that my xp 3000 will run stable on a fsb of 200 with a multiplier of 10.5. Have just played planet side for 6 hours with no problem. hope this works for every one else.
