Laptop DVD burning

First off I want to apologize if I am repeating a thread. I couldnt tell if I would be when I was browsing the forum. I have a really general question about creating dvds on my laptop. I have a dell laptop with a memorex external burner and imtoo dvd creator (the latest version). I am satisfied with all of this and with the quality of the dvds, but they burn sloooowwwly. Sometimes it takes up to twelve hours if I fill a disc. Im assuming the problem is one of two things. One I do not have a highspeed 2.0 usb port. I think my usb port is 1.1. Or two i need to get better software. I was just wondering what people thought and there suggestions for speeding up the process.

Thanks
