Transfering A hard drive from one computer to another

i was wondering if you could just move the hard drive into another computer and it would read it automatically or you had to do something to read it?
 
Basically, you cannot just pop a drive that has an operating system into another comp and boot it.

Some times you might, but that involves more luck than anything else - same motherboard chipset, same components, etc.

You can 'slave' a drive and read the data from an existing operating system (I have never done it with a Sata drive but it must be possible).
 
ok so i how would i transfer the hard drive to reteive the files from it and put it onto my other computer?
