When I play any movie (movie, not tv show on dvd, that works fine) on my Xbox 360 it goes to widescreen, which is not so bad with fullscreen movies. But when I have a widescreen movie, it goes into a "super" widescreen. And this bugs me because I frequently miss details. I've tried playing with the settings, but I can't figure it out.

Any help would be appreciated.

What do you mean by "super widescreen"? Can you give us an example or picture?

Well, let's see.

Ok picture wide screen on a "normal" tv. (the black bar on top and bottom).

Now double the size of those black bars and stretch out the picture. That's what I have.

Sounds like some setting or something is doubling on itself.

Make sure the game setting and tv resolution match up

There are only 2 settings on my xbox 360, and those are "normal" or "widescreen".

And it's set to normal, I tried it on widescreen thinking it was a glitch that would work itself out somehow...but that sent me into some sort of "triple" widescreen that was even worse.

make sure that the movie format and tv format match up.

Widescreen or regular?

There is really no resolution option on my tv, so I think that's not the problem.

Umm it puts regular movies into widescreen and widescreen movies into that double widescreen I described.

Oh and I know it works because it did at some point in time a while ago.
