2 video cards in the same machine...?

Is it possible to have two video cards running in the same comp, one for the operating system to the monitor and the other to play a DVD on a TV--doing both of these simultaneously?
 
its call sli for nvidia cards and crossfire for ati, you can google all the info you need. Plenty of it out there.
