We have several religions here. And that's good.

But a dry day on a religious holiday is a bit of a problem, because there are too many religious holidays here.

The US is a capitalist society, which in most states means that "Blue Laws" have been repealed. So, we don't stop for religious holidays. OK, maybe Christmas day,a little. Our ideal is the "separation of church and state". What we've actually acheived is the "separation of church and enterprise". Since church attendance is way down, and everybody's at the mall on Sunday, "godless heathens" is a tad of a hyperbole, but far from innacurate. "Praise the Lord and pass the Budweiser", might illuminate the hypocracy of it all. Basically, if you want to abstain from alchohol, the state isn't going to help prop up your character, it's incumbent upon the individual. And good luck with that, religious holidays are "inconvenient". Hey, you said so yourself:
