Copywrite Infringement

I have a tiny website using Mrsite for local information and I wanted to put on a couple of small maps of where the village is. I copied a cut out of google map, (crt alt PrtScn) saved it and pasted it into the web site. Someone must have objected and temporarily shut down my web site and deleted the google images.

I thought it was harmless as it is only linked to local charities etc to help them.

How could anyone know it was a supposed infringement if i merely 'saved as''?

Is there anywhere I can get legitimate free maps?

You should have had a formal notification about this - maybe by post.
What country are you in?

The website is now back up with the images deleted and removed from the directory!

It was only pictures of a couple of roundabouts!! How petty.

I am in UK

I don't think the company would care about you specificaly, but if they don't watch there copyrighted material then it opens the door and sets the standard. Well thats my best guess anyway

Google does provide a way to legally display its maps on your web page. See HERE for more information.
