I have 3 email accounts I use with thunderbird. How do you change the default account when composing messages? Quite frequently I forget to change the account I am using when composing and the email gets sent from the wrong account.

Figured it out - nevermind!

you can also change the From: address via the pull-down anytime prior to
clicking Send :)

First, make sure all accounts have private (non-global) mailboxes.

Each account will then be a level-one in the Folders Tree View.
click on the [+] in front of the Email box and the tree expands to show
Inbox
Drafts
Templates
Sent
Trash
Click on the Inbox and then on the Write Icon under the window menus.
You will be creating Email on the Account associated with this Inbox.

I have seven accounts so this gets to be important, at least for me :)

when we had only 1 pc with the internet what i did is set filters up so that we all had an inbox folder and when we got a message it would get sent there and my dad's emails would go to the normal inbox

i think in the account settings thing there's a button that says "set to default account" or something along those lines but i can't remember now because i'm getting a bit tired ;)

Yes, filters are neat -- I use them too. However, they only control where the
emails get stored, not which account is used to READ or SEND the email.

With Thunderbird, you can set the default SMTP server through which you SEND mail.
tools->Account Settings
pull all the way to the bottom, click Outgoing Server
click on the server name desired folllowed by Set Default

As disclosed previously, I have several accounts and (personally elect to) set
each account to send through its own server
click on the account name
the last line on the right will have Outgoing Server and you can select
the specific server to use for this account

I didn't want to use pull down tabs..... that was my whole point. If I could remember to do that every time, I wouldn't have email issues. I figured it what to do. You have to click on "set as default" in the account settings window. Somehow I overlooked it. This ensures you are composing from your default email account every time which is precisely what I wanted to do.

Here is a great solution:

Use the Thunderbird Add-on called "Correct Identity".

To install it, go to: Tools > Add-ons > [Install]. To use after it's installed go to: Tools > Add-ons > [Correct Identity] > [Options]. You can set which Identity to use as a default identity for each email account.
