I'm working on a new computer, but don't really know much about motherboards, so I need help picking one and a psu to go with it. I don't have a specific price limit yet, so I'm just trying to build something around $1000. I'd like some guidelines to picking a motherboard (already know what PCIEx16 is, in case someone thought I was that clueless), or some specific recommendations. Ask if you need more specifics.

This was $599.99 Canadian.
I reinstalled my SATA HD with XP installed,and my DVD-ROM and Audigy 4from my current System.
I bought and added a ATI X1650 PCIX x 16 - 512-$120.00
It will depend on what you can transfer from your current system.
This is a good way to get a mbd and cpu profesionally installed.
My total cost was 600 + 120 = $ 720.00.
I will spend another $50 or so for a new KBD,and Floppy drive.
Of course this doesn't include the monitor i already had.

I don't want to make it sound like your effects aren't unappreciated, but I should have mentioned earlier: I'd prefer to start by building a computer, rather than modifying a different one. I think my parents would rather I build a computer rather than have one built and replace parts, which is part of why they're letting me have my own computer. If I have trouble installing the parts or want them professionally installed, at least one of my cousins works with computers and could help with that.

Just explaining one way to do it for the money you have.
If you want to buy and install every component thats very commendable
to learn from the ground up.I expect my 12 year old Grandson will feel the
same way in the near future.I'm retired and not up to that way.
My son does the Technical work,I concentrate on Tweaking my OS.
I also have a friend who works with computers for advice.
You have some help as many don't so good luck.
Just be sure to get manuals and cd's for all devices.
