Ibm thinkpad - wrong ac adapter plugged in

Hi,
i have an ibm thinkpad type 2628 (pentirum III). the charger was lost, and my son found a charger that he thought would work. while i was at work, he plugged a sysco router charger (48 volts) into the laptop. now the laptop won't turn on. my question is, would the pc just shut off when a power current larger than allowed, is plugged in? (just like when it gets too hot, it shuts off). is there a fuse or reset or something? or is this thing just fried? there must be a way to fix this. or is there?
thanks.

Hi
Not good news. At best the power controller card is fried, at worst the whole motherboard went with it. You need a specialist repair shop - if you are in UK I can let you have a name.

The power regulator board will most likely be by the power socket, but as AlbertLionheart said, you will need a specialist to test the extent of the damage.
