The program can only be as smart as the person who programs it

Also electronic "brans" don't work in the same way ours do (scientists still don't understand it completely) so AI will never be the same as real, proper, human intelligence

If you hunt it down, there are longer articles around on the incident as well.
There was an episode of The Office (US) where Micheal Scott drove into a pond or lake because of GPS instructions. I tried to find a youtube clip, or break, or metacafe, and was unable to. It happened this season though.

Real intelligence must begin with memory and lots of it. From there associations are formed, such as: When my finger is inserted into fire it hurts. Result: a new memory pathway is formed to store the associations, fire, finger and pain.

This is why lower level animals like fruitflies and moths and such are pretty stupid, they have no active memory (or very little), so every few minutes, maybe even seconds..life is brand spankin new to them all over again! "Oh look at the pretty light!" poof.

You also need the ability to generalise from your memories. So instead of sticking your toe into the fire, you generalise and decide that sticking any of your body parts into something hot is probably not a good idea

Anyway.. This thread is not so "Automotive" anymore, so I'm moving this to general discussion.

I think Smash thinks that this is not such a bad thing. (I hope I interpreted that correctly). "Meeting Spot" threads always wander off topic. I wonder if it's because people enjoy a lively dialog and the topic is only there to break the ice, as it were.

Well I DID move it a little too much to the RIGHT, but I appreciate the support captain. *salute* It WAS just meant as a punchline, not a topic divert"er".

I apologize to those I might have offended.

Are using a navigator and your own eyes mutually exclusive?

Some women tend to give GPS directions. If you run into this situation, you should probably update her from the latest adult video data base.

Thanks guys.

I probably will never use a gps type system. I mean how often do I travel so places where I don't know where I'm going? Even a long holiday trip requires a few seconds on-line to see a map, write down a few Highway numbers and you're there.

I don't know it's just me, my life style doesn't require such devices. Now if I were a travelling sales rep, criss-crossing the US or Europe or something, that would be different and a device like Tom Tom would be very handy and practical I would think.

Well there are actually several examples that disprove that. I'm a chess player myself and often times the creator of great chess programs aren't the best chess players around. =)

I don't use GPS (never found the need to) The good old map works fine for me

By the way, kirock, I thought that was hilarious.
