well, xp sp2 was released late summer of 2004! "Not running Windows Update too often" is an understatement! 
here's some reference articles/guides i just posted for someone else today. Click here.
If you recover it, you can configure Windows Update to at least notify when updates available if someone doesn't want them installed automatically.

I read about the last known configuration. but f8 sometimes doesnt work... but i guess it'll work. I'll tell him tonight thank you <3
