DVD RW acting up

hey i am the proud owner of a Pioneer DVD-RW-106D, well not SO proud its pretty ancient. however its not had problems before. untill now...

I was trying to write a data cd and it was having none of it. It didnt even begin the write. Clone Cd just screamed "OH NO!!!" and told me the DVD RW had failed. I tryed upgrading the firmware and got the same result. It can however play DVDs and games and so forth fine...

any idea whats wrong?

It could be that the writing laser is dirty or broken, either try a lens cleaner (if there is one that can do write lenses - I'm not sure) or replace the drive.
