HDD Power Connections

I have just fried my second Raptor HDD in my self-built system and have just realized that I've been connecting both the SATA power cable and the older 4 pin power connector at the same time. Could this be the cause at all? I'm buying a new drive tomorrow and I'm tired of reinstalling software : (

Next time I think I'll start with cheaper hardware..
