Understanding log data

I was looking at my logs under /var/logs and there are many abbreviations and terminology items that I cannot interpret. Where can I get information that will give me the meaning of these terms so I can decipher the information?

A program writes to the log file. It is up to the author of the program what and how is written. Read the documentation for the specific program you are interested in. Or, just google the bits you don't understand.
