Dom Player needed to play video file?

I have a video file my friend gave me that he couldn't open, so he passed it on to me to see if I could open it.

When I open it, I get a message on the screen that I need to download the Dom Player from a website to view the video.

I was under the impression that the Dom Player is actually a type of malware.
Is this true?

If it is true, can the file be converted or fixed to play in a normal media player, such as DivX or Winamp for example so the file can be viewed without the need for a Dom Player?

Thanks,
Daveo

Apologies for double posting.

But after some searching, I've found that this media file will Not play on VLC media player, and is likely a trojan or virus (Not VLC, the dom file)

It is advised to remove it (delete) immediately

I have done a little research on Dom files as well and the file itself isn't a nasty but it appears the Dom player may be.

Thanks,
