Hey
I have a dell inspron 1501 running XP. Im not sure what the battery/ PSU is but when i start windows before it loads a black screen comes up saying the system cannot recognise the battery and will be uinable to recharge. It then gives me a list of options like press any key to continue which starts windows normally and when he cable is plugged in it still re charges. I also get another option which takes me to the BIOS. Does anyone know whats been going on/ happening?

I'm a tad worried about Hardware failure, namely the DC converter board.
I suppose what I'm implying by that, is always do backups.

Anyway, try this:

Laptop off
Remove power adaptor
Remove the battery

Slide and hold the battery-bay latch release on the bottom of the computer, and then lift the battery from the bay.

Blow out any/all dust, on Laptop and Battery terminals

Leaving both the battery and mains power out,
Hold down the Laptop On button for 30 Seconds (dispersing any/all internal voltage)
Put the Battery back in
Plug in the Power Adaptor
Turn on your laptop
