10 Reasons Why Building a Gaming PC is Awful

Actually some of thecworse things are thecstuff on the mobo discs.. I.e. the usb hubs that wont work till the drivrs are installed, which install from the usb hub?? Or what the programs that look like they do something, intel ime, but arent needed. Or setting mobo otions before installing th os, then realising that you need to set the option then re install the OS. Then realising you need to install a hypervisor then change the bios options then re install the OS. And the sleep and hibernate options. Raid. Hmm..fake raid...hard raid..raid5? Raid0? Raid6 or Raid10.. Aaaargghh.

Great article, but one thing your missing...

Once someone builds a PC (I put my first bare-bones-kit together when I was 14...some swear they did it much earlier...) they somehow morph into a "I know everything about IT" person. Wreaking havoc for those like myself who spent years getting professional training and certifications in the IT field. Self-entitled "IT" people then go on to tell everyone else how there's no reason for "IT professionals" while they're around.

Typically I don't mind, everyone should be proud about building a PC, after all you BUILT a machine with nothing more than your bare hands and curiosity to fuel the adventure. But PLEASE for the love of computers STOP confusing the accomplishment with a career. They are not the same.

And with that said, game on!

Agreed with the possible caveat that in the 80's that was the Only way to become the PC expert, there were no hardware classes, MS-DOS classes, etc. That mindset got handed down perhaps.

I know that as a 'past' expert, I now have countless certificates proving my utter inability to do anything modern without great anxiety and procrastination. I gladly upgrade whenever there is simply no possible path allowing me to continue avoiding to do so.

The other thing that I cherish about articles such as this is reading the comments and re-learning just how many humans in the tech arena had their humor gene irradiated and cannot wait to prove it.

Empathy pills will be a Great invention..

This could put many people off from building a computer - article paid by PC world , ha!
What you get is 3 yrs warranty on cpu, on gpu, 2 on HDD, 2-3 m/board, 5 yrs on PSU and so on, when you build your own
1 yr warranty only PC World and normally fitted with a max 300 -400 watt shite psu in a shite case.

Yo go and figure ;)

That thermal paste part is the one part I always hated doing.

Ah, well, you were doing it wrong!

Was troubling to me too back when I started building setups. These days though, I actually enjoy laying the new paste on a chip.

Best parts, are definietly the the 8 and 10. And sadly, true everytime. Maybe spend more and get rid of those two?

Ah, well, you were doing it wrong!

Nothing to do with wrong or right, I use the lentil size drop personally.

The issue is that it really is an unknown and you just dont knowif its covered until you test, I have had to re-seat one heat sink because despite using the recommended method it just didnt spread right.

Just the one part of the process that is hassle.

After having built hundreds of PCs while working at a local PC shop you get pretty comfortable with most of this stuff, starts getting pretty mundane. Some of the "points" make the author sounds like a whinny *****, the whole anti static strap point is just a waste of time, or filler, actually most of the article is just frustrating to read. Anyone can build a computer these days, making it sound like an impossible task doesn't make sense any more, just makes the author sound like an *****.
I'm quite shocked that the MAJORITY of everyone on here didn't feel this way! NONE of these things should be shocking or confusing for you at this stage IF you are truly an enthusiast.
