1Gb memory but Windows finds 256Mb only

Hello,

I have a laptop HP dv6000 with 1Gb of memory but Windows recognise 256Mb only.
So my system is very sluggish.

I have tested the 2x512Mb modules and their are fine.

Any idea where to dig ?

Many thanks

Francois

When you say that you have tested the memory modules, what did you use to test them? If you havent done so already run memtest on them. www.memtest86.com.

Also what does it show up in bios? 1gb? Does the bios memory test come out alright?

From the sound of it, it sounds like faulty memory modules. If it had found 512mb I would be much more confident that there were just some setup problems. But that it only sees half of one memory module isnt good

Thanks.
Yes I have tested the memory with Memtest86 and also GoldMemory and both detect no fault.
Also the BIOS say 1GB and CPUZ sees 1 Gb as well.

Cheers

Wow, that is interesting. I have no idea.

If it was me i would probably try with a reinstall of Windows, clean reinstall, but that is purely because I cant up with any other good suggestions.

I know it is really bizarre.
I have loaded the system with Winternals CD and UBCD and both work with 1 Gb.
So I trust a reinstallation will work but I would like to avoid it

Thanks anyway

One way to test it would be to do a second boot partion and install windows there and see if it resolves it.

I know it isnt a very clever solution to just reinstall ...
