According to Sony, Vaio owners shouldn't upgrade to Windows 10 until October

Don't think I want to do a clean install in case there are problems and I need to revert back to 8.1. I would like to try Win 10 but don't want to wait till Nov (according to Sony's chart) but am hesitant to just download 10. Want to keep my favorites, etc. Can't decide what to do..and yes, VAIO is working fine on Win 8.1.

If Windows 8.1 is working perfectly I think you can be confident that the upgrade to Windows 10 will be fine. I chose the option of keeping documents and programmes which worked for me. I chose this option with all three of my computers. When I was sure everything was OK I ran CCleaner to tidy things up.

Thanks for the advice..this is encouraging. Will have to think about it. I just can't deal with computer problems right now; but I am so discouraged by Sony. They have had plenty of time to prepare drivers etc for this upgrade. They just don't care any more. I'm thinking if I wait till November, there will be another delay. I use CCleaner now..it works with Win 10?

Sony don't make computers anymore after they lurched from one disaster to another with their premium priced laptops. They sold the business as a going concern to another company. I think that computers under the Vaio brand are being sold but only for the Asian market.

Hello. I installed Windows 10 but now it is impossible for me te read video (YouTube). My vaio is vpcec1s1e. Have an idea ? Thanks

People............sony doesn't make parts that go inside of a computer. they dont make motherboards chipsets ram blah blah blah. it's not their responsibility to update bios, chipsets or anything in order to make them compatible with windows 10. that would be the other guys. quit flaming sony for something that isn't their problem.
You must be working for Sony or a bad marketing for Sony...they should stick Sony badge on if they don't want to take responsibility...do you think Lenovo, Toshiba or HP make their own schitt?

Sony failed completely with their computers and sold the Vaio division so you can't really expect much support. It was pretty minimal even when they were producing computers and selling them at inflated prices. Having said that, my Vaio which I bought second hand with a duff nVidia 8400 chip is still going well after I had a professional upgrade the graphics chip. It came originally loaded with Vista and is running W10 beautifully without any new drivers.

thats like saying buick should take all the heat if something goes wrong under the hood even though buick didnt make the part but duralast did. youre funny guy. p.s the last sony product I owned was a ps3 heh

Um, yes, they should... You're supposed to check quality control of every part you put in your car.... Ask Ford about their partnership with Firestone... When the tires started exploding, they (rightly) took the heat because they hadn't tested the tires properly - even though they didn't make them.

This thread, by the way, is from August of last year... Anyone know if it's safe to update a Vaio to Windows 10 yet?

Hi SS,
I couldn't agree more about the quality control. Unlike Sony (Japanese), Toshiba, HP, Gigabyte and many other laptop brands, they took the responsibility to have their brand stamped. I have total of 4 Sony Vaio, and until today (10 May 2016) I still can't upgrade. Whereas I have 1 Gigabyte Aorus (Taiwanese), I upgraded them without issue. I paid over AUD$4000 for VPCZ128GB and VPCZ139GB. I should have known that Sony is not made for Laptop. Their TV used to be good, but now, far behind Samsung and even LG. The price is still rocketing.

Squid Surprise, I've been trying to upgrade and fresh install VAIO, but kept getting the laptop shutdown. The laptop is getting really hot even running Windows 7. Sony i7 is a joke.

mrjgriffin, you don't even get your analogy right. Buick is a crappy car and you paid for the quality, whereas Sony is like Mercedes Benz, or at least the price was.

Hey Squid Surprise, please check answers on page one. I answered one of the guys regarding a fresh install of windows 10. If you have any inquiries, please don't hesitate to reply and ask. Best regards.

Yeah... I've read that too... but am still a bit concerned that there are no official Windows 10 drivers for the Vaio... think I'll just leave my wife's laptop with Win 7 until she complains...

Perhaps you can find whether other owners of the same model have had any issues when upgrading. My FZ38M, that shipped with Vista, updated with no problems. I had already upgraded it to W7 32 bit and required no new drivers. Sony were useless for support even before they sold Vaio.

If it's working fine with windows 7, I would agree with you keeping it to avoid the hassle. It seems that your Vaio is a bit old saying that there are no official drivers available. Usually, windows 8.1 drivers work fine with windows 10 and the latter verifies most of the chipsets especially old ones but yet this is not guaranteed.

Just remember that Sony are out of the game so there won't be any such drivers. It's a case of researching the Internet or hoping for the best then rolling back if there's a serious problem.

Where on earth did you come with the incredibly bizarre idea, that it isn't the responsibility of any manufacturer who wishes to put their name on the box, to do all the system integration tasks. Yes, up to and including the stupid a** advertising splash screens and proprietary software. Well, vapor, crap, and adware, call it what you must.

Or were you joking?

no im not joking. the sony name might be on the outside but if someone complains about their broken pc..say their hard drive **** out and its made by western digital.......sony will look to western digital because of the issue.....not sony themselves because they didnt make the part lol. if the parts were actually made by sony then sony should be to blame entirely otherwise they should just get criticism for including a part from a shitty company in their little box they stamped their name on. sony didnt make it. enough said.

Reality check here. Sony unloaded Vaio almost two years ago and before that were notorious for lack of support. They were a disaster in the realm of computers. Dream on if you expect them to give decent support two years after they have stopped making computers. W10 wasn't around when they made their last laptops.

That is the point!! If your HD dies, SONY will look to Western Digital, not YOU!!
Regardless of who makes the components, if Sony's name is on the product, SONY is responsible for it!!

Perhaps all very true. But, you still can't pin Sony's warranty fulfillment issues on Western Digital, no matter how much you would love to,

An OEM part, sold to an OEM, is the OEM's responsibility, and end user's problem.

Nobody said life is fair, and in very few places is it less fair, than in the realm of discontinued electronics.

A proud owner of the VAIO than has two courses of action. Throw the drive away and buy a new one.....or....,throw the laptop away and buy a new one. I might add that the latter course of action, seems to be the most popular nowadays...:D

A new laptop would be faster, cheaper, lighter, and more stylish (*). Reasons aplenty to leverage yourself right into a new one. Hell, you're mad at Sony? That's one helluva good reason to buy a Macbook Pro!(y) And.........., you'll be teaching Sony a lesson in the process...:p

(*) Before I forget, a new laptop would have Windows 10 on it. It's the best Windows ever! I know, because I say the signs saying so at my local, "Microcenter".
