Acer Iconia Tab A100 quietly arrives at Walmart with $350 price tag

The Acer Iconia Tab A100 has quietly surfaced at Walmart, and it will only set you back $350. At the time of writing, there was no listing on Walmart's website, but Engadget readers managed to find a price and a tag.

The price is not a typo. Acer really is interested in competing with tablet makers by starting a price war. Still, the device doesn't (yet) appear to be available in every Walmart, so you'll have to either just wait for the official announcement or go check your local store. Acer might not even deliver on the former. It looks like the company wants to keep advertising and marketing at a minimum, just to see how sales are based solely on a low price. We are currently testing an Iconia Tab A500 in-house and will be posting our review shortly.

While most 7-inch -tablets nowadays run Android 2.3 (codenamed Gingerbread), this one is powered by Android 3.0 (codenamed Honeycomb). That's the main reason it took so long for it to come to the US, though we can't help but wish it was running Android 3.1 (codenamed Honeycomb).

The Iconia Tab A100 is a 7-inch device powered by Nvidia's Tegra 2 dual-core chip. The tablet went up for preorder in Amazon's UK store two months ago priced at £300.00 ($485). It features a 1024 x 600 resolution touchscreen, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of flash storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI-out, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera, a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, and around 5 hours of battery life. It's not the best Android tablet out there, but it appears to be good bang for your buck.

However, with these "budget" tablets I do always question the screen quality. Might have to check it out in person.

Interesting... I look forward to your review. Please look at the brightness and viewing angles of the display if you could. This is a determining factor for my use.

You can NEVER check the screen quality from looking at specs. Definitely go and check it out before you buy. Some tablets have the worst viewing angles I've ever seen.

I saw one Youtube video about this unit at a show and he said it had very wide viewing angles. the comments i saw were that it seemed a little cheap with the plastic body, but the specs and numerous connectors on it for $350 - i don't see anything that can touch it at that price. Acer may have a serious winner on its hands. .. i guess time will tell.

This is a serious tablet. It has all the connections and awesome specs and a very good screen. I've been wanting a 7 inch tablet because i want to be able to actually enjoy my computing anywhere. I am sooooo getting one of these.. I think that if i am strong enough i might be able to hold out for the 3G version but i can't promise anything.

For a tablet, comparing hardware specifications is rather irrelevant.

Other makes and models will just lead to a road of endless frustrations.

Go for a Apple Ipad - It just works!

iPads are fine. But, for some of us they are just too darn large! I think 7" is perfect. I have a CM7 Color Nook and I really like the size and portability. iPad? I may as well take my netbook or my Macbook. Nothing wrong with the android system...yeah its different than the iPad but difference is good. I think both are great...probably will never be a 7" iPad....Apple would prefer selling an iTouch. I do like the flexibility of the android system vs the closed village. But each to his own.

I also have Nook Color with CM7, can't be beat. Surprised this Acer only has 512 ram not 1GB. Nook Color has same resolution, same RAM, same flash size, with quality IPS screen, just not the ports, CPU, and cameras. I second the 7" size, better for games that require screen touch and tilting unit at same time.
