Acer travelmate 512dx powers on but nothing on screen

The laptop turns on when you hit the power switch; the power light comes on, and the cd drive will open and shut, but there is no other sign of life.

So far I have tryed fully charging it, turning it on with and without power supply, and I have also tryed attaching it to an external TFT monitor but I have had no luck.

Are there any other obvious things to try or likely problems with it?

Check the backlight

Take a flashlight and shine into the screen from different angles after it is started. If you can see your icons with the flashlight the backlight is out or if nothing is there possibly the power inverter. Have you tried pluging in to a regular monitor via the vga port on the rear. This is a sure test if it displays on the regular monitor.

Yes I have tryed plugging it into my flat screen monitor at home - it doesnt work. But I will still try the flash light thing, thanks.
