    Display Properties>Desktop tab>Colour>black

    active desktop ?

    i tried this also, but that only changes the color of the shadow on the icons, not the backdrop of the text unfortunately.

    im running Media Centre Edition if that makes any difference?

    try the Theme settings; CP->Display->Appearance
    click Advanced
    the Choice box labelled Item: has several components that can be altered

    try looking into programs that changes the styles of your desktop, like StyleXP or windowsblinds or something.. they might help (i'm guessing..)
