Adobe Flash for Android passes 1 million download mark

Despite Apple's insistence that Flash must die and is not worth the hassle of porting to mobile devices, it is still one of the most demanded features for mobile browsers today. Unfortunately, not many devices support it, though apart from the mobile version of Safari, more and more browsers are working with Adobe to fix this. Google's Android, for example, received Flash support earlier this year with the release of version 2.2 (codenamed Froyo). It turns out the plugin is in high demand: Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Android has been downloaded over one million times thus far, according to ZDNet.

Despite the milestone, Adobe has work to do; some Flash sites still don't work correctly, if at all. It appears that this is because many sites are detecting a mobile device and delivering a mobile version of their site, which doesn't include Flash content. The company is working with these sites to make sure they detect Flash support on mobile devices correctly, but it takes time.

Adobe will be hosting its Max 2010 developer conference from October 23 to October 27 in Los Angeles. The company will likely use the event to tout the mobile capabilities of Flash and talk up the AIR platform for mobile devices. Hopefully it will also announce further improvements for both.

Why is this not out for the Samsung Captivate yet? WTF am I missing here? I keep seeing that the release date was sometime in September, but it is not October...

Mobile OEMs suck at approving and customizing new OS versions. They sucked at it in the days of Windows Mobile and they suck at it in the days of Android. Hopefully Windows Phone will fix this.

hmmm... Apple might have a point though. Personally i'm happy to see flash video taking over the web, finally ridding of those horrible real player and quicktime videos that were floating around everywhere. Now with nearly every site running video with flash, I don't really have to worry about having the necessary codecs or crappy applications for all the different video formats.

But Adobe Flash is not very efficient, it is (I assume) a messy bit of code and is a bit heavy on the resources. Adobe is constantly tweaking it and sending out updates to correct bugs and performance issues... and honestly I don't feel its getting much better. So with these problems in mind I understand Apple's take on flash.

But despite its problems, it is now the most popular video player on the internet by a considerable amount. It killed real player and quicktime, thus i'm happy.

Ahh maybe thats why Apple hates Flash, it killed Quicktime! Hah! I figured it out! All by myself! I feel special now...

Adobe Flash has too many bugs and performance issues than any other web plugin for sure. In addition to that, they want us to install patches everyday and also restart the computer after the patching process, wtf?

Microsoft Silverlight seems very fast compared to flash, but it is another piece of pathetic code which hangs often and doesn't work most of the time.

Apple quicktime? Don't even ask me to comment on that junk.

So, where do we stand? There are no decent reliable and fast animation plugin for the Web yet!
