After startup, no taskbar, mouse or keyboard functionality

  1. I downloaded some codecs for windows media player video and now after restarting my pc I have the following problems:

    • Mouse cursor works, but left and right clicks don't
    • Icons in the Task Bar Notification Area (lower right hand side of screen) do not load, it seems there is a virus preventing that step in the bootup
    • Only program I can access is Task Manager via ctrl-alt-delete
    • keyboard disabled
    • start menu disabled

I looked through the task manager processes and there was a duplicate file of smss.exe, but upon deletion and reboot that file did not show up again, but it also did not fix the problem (symptoms are still the same.)

The computer acts normally under safe mode, but there is no connectivity to the internet then.

Can anyone post any leads or actions I can take to ID and get rid of the virus/malware that is disabling the pc? Any programs to generate a log file to help with diagnostics?

    Thx
    k
