Solved Aftermath of System Check

It appears I removed the virus. Task Manager shows things are running OK. I've been able to alter the hide buttons on just about every file however the program files under start/my programs are empty. The file folders appear but their file properties read 0. I can run the programs but I have to go into the Windows program file. The start/programs/accessories file is also altered. The Systems Tools only contains "explorer". As a result there's no way to get to "restore".

Note: in registry editor, checkedvalue is at 1)which is where it should be... so I'm told. BTW, should default value be listed at 2?

I'm using Windows XP.

Do I have to live with these changes? Are the start/my programs/ shortcuts damaged permanently? Would reinstalling XP on top of what's running help or hinder?

Any help is welcome.

The problem is solved.

running unhide.exe (at bleepingcomputer) was able to restore all of my start/programs shortcuts.
