All text and spaces in MS Word 2003 turned into square boxes

I saved the file directly to the flash drive after typing in one of the computers in our comp. laboratory, I used office 2010 but saved it in office 2003 format. When i got home and opened the file in my PC, all the text/paragraphs are displayed in square boxes. I'm using office 2003 at home. I tried font formatting, open and repair, converting to other file types, opened the file in same PC where i encoded. Please give me some links and other recommendations. The contents of the file are parts of my thesis... thanx

Perhaps you used a font in Office 2010 that you don't have on your home computer.
What OS are both computers?

Thanx PJAMME, Arial is the default font. I used Win 7 and Office 2010 in the lab, XP and office 2003 at home. Text also are displayed in # sign when i opened it using open office.
