Following up from the release of its next-generation desktop GPUs earlier this year, AMD is now bringing its 28nm GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture to notebooks with three new series arriving in May or June: the 7700M (“Chelsea”), 7800M (“Heathrow’), and 7900M (“Wimbledon”).

As you'd expect, the Radeon HD 7900M is destined for desktop replacements and gaming laptops, while the 7800M covers the middle-ground and the 7700M will likely make its way into ultrathin laptops and other machines aiming for long battery life without sacrificing a discrete GPU. As usual, there will be more than one model for each family, but for now AMD is providing the configuration for the highest performance parts in each category, which following their naming convention should be the 7970M, 7870M, and 7770M.

In terms of performance, AMD provided a few slides and charts, in which we can see the HD 7970M providing more than 50% gains compared to the HD 6990M as well as Nvidia's GTX 675 in a number of games.

On the features front all but the Radeon HD 7700 series will support PCI Express 3.0 and the three will support OpenCL, DirectCompute 11, DirectX 11, as well as an updated graphics switching technology called Enduro. The latter is essentially AMD's version of Nvidia's Optimus, and will work with the integrated GPUs on both Intel and AMD chips, maximizing battery life. Combined with AMD's Power Gating technology and AMD ZeroCore, we should see active and idle power draw drop compared to the company's previous mobile GPUs.

The new mobile GPUs will join other members of the Radeon HD 7000M family, the HD 7450 (“Seymour’), Radeon HD 7500M (“Thames 64b”), and Radeon HD 7600M (“Thames 128b”), which are already on the market but are based on the company’s 40nm process.
