AMD strikes back at Nvidia by releasing... bicycles

No it doesn’t!

Just shows you how crazy the world is - They could ship them to 3rd world countries FOC - hell chinese ships go everywhere . Kids wouldn't have to walk 10km to school . People going to market not so reliant on exploitative truck drivers - saying that would need to make tires really robust - still most kids in Africa would love a bike if only for fun and joy

I think what concerns people is the statement "the world needs bikes not gpus, in order to save the environment", is one small step away from advocating for government regulation to coerce and enact that opinion.

Perhaps not in your case, but plenty of other people have made that treacherous leap -- and in a thread about a GPU maker suddenly deciding to sell bikes, the concern is apropos.
I don't see how my statements can be twisted into advocating for government regulation, considering I made no mention of terms associated with "control", "capital", "economy", "coercion", "law", "regulation", "production", "manifesto", "adjustment", "supervision", "management", "codification" or the like. Furthermore, the statement was "The world needs more bikes than GPUs, after all.". This does not imply any objection to the existence of GPUs, nor does it associate any burden on anyone for owning or having purchased a GPU in the absence of a bicycle. My original statement does not mention anything about the environment either, but I will admit there is also a benefit regarding the well-being of the environment. I find your interpretation and reading of my comment to be disingenuous and if I may be brutally honest, the reaching you did to bring my statement closer in association with publicity for government interference or (God forbid) Communism is quite insulting.

Honestly, I didn't even think about shipping them elsewhere to those that need it, especially since China does not have the luxury to keep accumulating trash. Makes me a little bit angry, ngl.

This.....is just stupid.

I mean if you are going to offer bikes, why wait until september? For much of the world we are heading into the cooler months. Biking time this year is limited.

Now, if this was at the height of the corona panic, when everyone was at home doing nothing for 6+ weeks and had super unemployment/stimulus money, then it would make sense, but most people are back at work now, and the warm months have passed, and bills are coming due.

Just seems like incredibly poor timing for what amounts to colored tires and a sticker on a bike.

I hope you realize there are countries below the equator as well.....

Just because your winter is approaching, it doesn't the same happens elsewhere.

This is bizarre, is there a healthy profit to be made from cheap bikes?
No. There is little to no profit in any bikes let alone cheap ones.
Markup is like 1.2-1.3. And go figure you need to sell a huge amount to make money, plus store them, ship them, build them, and provide a care package.... You make money, or used to, selling tubes, racks, fenders, brake pads...

Since these bicycles are in their merchandise store, I don't take them as evidence that AMD is becoming a bicycle company, because I never thought of it as a coffee mug company or a T-shirt company. But it is indeed unusual, even so.

They ship these bikes only witin the US....southern states are obviuosly exempt from harsh winter, but still, a large portion of the "target audience" would be exposed to colder days soon.

Totally agreed. This is the main reason I don't understand why they have launched this product line in the first place. They need to generate revenue, with good markup, in order to grow their business...I don't see how this would help.
On the other hand, if this is just a cheap "chinese bike" with AMD stickers slapped on the frame, I fear it won't help to bolster brand recognition...it could easily turn into a can of worms with a flood of complaints (and warranty issues and support costs), actually damaging the brand in the end. I do hope I'm wrong.

I'm thinking that the timing for this release is just about right for Christmas.

I fail to see how this could make someone emotionally happy or distressed. It is just a cheap bike with a logo and what I would call ugly tires. If I was an AMD fan, I'd be just as happy with an AMD tee-shirt. I certainly wouldn't want to pay an additional $100 for a logo on a $200 bike.

Read the article you linked and it seems to be related to a bike-sharing program that is subsidized by the Chinese Government. This happened as a case of oversupply and they then had to dump them. When I say "The world needs more bikes..." I am referring to the lack of a climate and health-conscious culture in general, where the use of a bike would become a stepping stone in achieving a better overall health of the population. My statement stands.
Yeah ok mate, it wasn’t serious. I did get the premise of your point. I guess you don’t have much of a sense of humour..

If you're going for sarcasm, it's best to end your statements with "/s". Otherwise, I'd peg you for another lunatic on the internet. Just an advise.
