Update: Apple has confirmed the event by issuing press passes today.

According to unnamed sources cited by All Things Digital, Apple plans to unveil its second-generation iPad at a media event on Wednesday, March 2. That's next week, so if the report is accurate you can expect Apple to confirm the gathering and issue invitations soon. As usual, Cupertino has been quiet about the new device, but the rumor mill has conjured up a handful of possible specs.

According to Concord Securities, the iPad 2's display is 30 to 35% thinner with better anti-reflective qualities, but it has the same resolution. Because of the reduced screen thickness and other evolutionary improvements, you can expect the device to be slimmer and lighter. Analysts also expect rear and front-mounted camera, which will be accompanied by Apple's FaceTime video calling software.

Inside, the new iPad is believed to carry a quicker processor and graphics core, more RAM, as well as Qualcomm's multimode WWAN chip with support for GSM and CDMA networks. Overall, the second-gen iPad isn't expected to be a radical leap forward, instead bringing a minor update akin to the iPhone 3GS. Nonetheless, it should be able to hold its own against the near-term competition.

Higher res display please. I'll carry around a car battery to power it. Just give me my 1920x1280 screen. It'll be double the iphone 4 screen res so apps will scale perfect :p

Also that looks pretty thin. I'd probably snap it in half by accident.

What's the reason everyone is using 1200x760 or ~? Is it a materials/cost thing, or is it just that it was the intro res and no one sees any reason to differentiate themselves by offering something better?

But I'm with you in spirit :)

It looks like there will not be a higher resolution display for the iPad 2. Most pundits agree that if a new iPad is released it will be around September as a high-end version of it.

Yah there will be...

Apple wont stick with 1024x768. All new tablets have surpassed the 1280x720 barrier.

1280x720 panels are cheap. No company feels they need to match apple's 960x640 on phones either.

SEE THIS PEOPLE? http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/hitachis-4-5-inch-ips-display-has-1280-x-720-res-1-100-1-contr/

THERE'S NO REASON NOT TO USE IT! I guess these companies just want to let apple grab the first 720p mobile phone crown.

I can think of a few reasons... I can't speak to the iPad, but as far as the iPhone goes, i don't know if there really was a reason to match 960x640. I have an HTC evo, which has a lower resolution screen than an iPhone, but it's as clear as I need it to be. If text could be 'readable' at a smaller size i'd need reading glasses to see it. (i'm a bit young for those)

Maybe I should be watching more high-res video, but streaming high quality video is mostly likely restricted by bandwith. And my little city of only a million people doesn't have 4G coverage.

Everything has to be balanced by cost and quality. A lower resolution may not deter as many buyers as a higher price tag.

am i the only 1 who thinks that there is not much improvement from the old ipad? oh wait. 2 cameras... wow.... my nokia had it back in 1997

fan boys go wild!

Will be interested in the battery life once the offical specs are released, have they been yet?

Apple tends to be secretive. No official specs have been released.

I assume you mean they issued a PRESS RELEASE today.
An actual journalist would know the difference between that and a press pass.

You guys probably ought to just go ahead and post the releases verbatim (look it up) instead of trying to paraphrase them and add your own "touch."

read the article from the link and came across this gem
I don't care what it does or how, just show me where to pre-order. It could be the same iPad in a different shaped box for all I care, I am getting one and that is that.
Apple fan boys amaze me sometimes at their willingness to become sheep, granted this comment could be sarcastic but I've read worst.
