Apple wants to keep sex and violence off its upcoming streaming service

In brief: Talk of Apple launching a Netflix-style streaming service has been around since 2015, but the company has yet to unveil its plans. According to a new report, Cupertino is doing everything to keep the platform’s content family friendly; a policy that’s causing problems and further delays.

The Wall Street Journal writes that Apple’s quest to keep “gratuitous sex, profanity or violence” off the upcoming service has seen its own staff in Los Angeles refer to it as “expensive NBC,” and has resulted in the launch being pushed further back.

The WSJ writes that when Apple CEO Tim Cook was shown Vital Signs last year, a show based on the life of hip-hop star and producer Dr. Dre, he told Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine that scenes of violence, cocaine use, and an orgy meant the company couldn’t show it.

There have also been issues with a drama based on a morning news show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, for which Apple paid more than $12 million per episode. The company's objections to some of the humor and its desire for a more “upbeat” tone has seen it replace the showrunner, which, along with Witherspoon’s scheduling issues, has resulted in production delays.

Last year, Apple set aside $1 billion to purchase and produce original content for its streaming service. The first big deal it signed was with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television company to bring back 80’s show Amazing Stories. But showrunner Bryan Fuller has left the reboot after Apple said it wanted a more family-friendly show, rather than the original “dark” vision.

Apple has, however, given the go-ahead to some “edgier” shows, including one from Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan about a couple who lose a young child—though it asked for crucifixes to be removed from the couple’s house, as religion and politics are taboo subjects, it seems.

Apple is known for keeping adult content off its app store, and it appears the company is taking the same approach with the streaming service. While the likes of Netflix, HBO, and Amazon aren't afraid to include sex and violence in their shows, it seems Apple is confident its sanitized approach will be just as successful.

Yes yes, just cover your eyes and plug your ears and pretend this stuff doesn't exist in the real world. Honestly if Apple ran a country I think it would end up looking like the old USSR, these things are ok these things are not, you will dress this way, religion is taboo you cannot believe in any deity other than the mighty Steve.

The world is full of puritans all of a sudden. No sex, no violance, no drugs, no bad language no offensive content. Nothing interesting whatsoever.

If Apple wants to compete with Cbeebies that's fine. It won't sell though.

Yet they have factories making their products ran by Foxcon where they have suicide nets outside to catch works that try to kill themselves, workers live at the plants and are forced to work 35 hour shifts. They eve change their roommates every week so they never get to know anyone. They created a hell on earth yet wont show fictitious "sins"? All to make their products 23% cheaper...

**** Apple and **** all their bullshit. I have never bought an Apple product in my life and never will. Didn't they already try Apple TV and a bunch of other crap that failed? If this succeeds (it won't) no doubt Apple will claim they invented or at least revolutionized the streaming industry! You know, like they did with the iPhone, iPad, iWatch, etc.

They do because they can. Sadly, their government cant give them a better or even equal alternative. That 35 hour shift allows them to live better than those not "lucky" enough to work at foxcon. So in comparison, thats not the worst job in that country.

Thank you for admitting your guilt of contribution to the evils of the world. But then all I needed to do was read your moniker.

Yeah I agree. If Apple could conform their work force behind this mentality, I'd love to stand behind this service.

Of all the things to hate Apple over, this is the one people are choosing? Lol, I have yet to buy an iDevice because I don't like Apple and their fashion tax, but complaining about their choice of content is laughable.

Seriously, who cares?

So apple will simply ignore anything other then movies for 4 year olds and hallmark level romcoms? Sounds like netflix should be shaking in their boots.../s

Of course it would, Apple, google, facebook, et al are all in commiefornia, the land where people shout for full blown communism. These companies love censorship and controlled ideas, because they think it gives them more power. Twitter loves to ban conservatives over harmless memes while allowing liberals who scream about removing trump alone, google employees are playing around with more manipulation of search results to attempt to influence users, hollywood (also in california) pushes liberal propaganda and biases in a shocking number of films, ece. Must be something in the water, because the term "get woke, go broke" exists for a reason, your average users DGAF about liberal virtue signalling, they want a decent product/service.

Pandering to the youth, who are "anti-capitalist" while owning $1k iphones, was the smartest thing apple could have done. Millennial/gen X hippies with horrible spending habits will happily dump 1-3K on an apple product if they think it is somehow more peace/socialist promoting over those evil android devices.

The same number of people that care about the number of apple devices you own.

The comments above say otherwise.

Ps. Last I checked, Disney focuses on the no “gratuitous sex, profanity or violence” crowd. Sounds like they're doing ok lol

I like this approach. Sometimes I feel like sex and violence I shoved right down our throats because "it sells".

I currently use Netflix but I'm tempted to switch over to Disney in a couple of years as it will be more suitable for my young family. Apple might be a good streaming service to consider too.

I only watch sex, violence and education programs but as no streaming service has unbiased educational programs I can't watch those. Good that I wont miss anything if it has no sex or violence, it wont have education, american government wont allow that, can't think of any other reasons why no one offers education, especially as it would be dirt cheap to get.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I honestly think |"Deadpool 2" was the funniest superhero movie I've ever seen. I hope "Deadpool 3", (if it ever comes to be), is even more laced with off color humor and remarks. I was in stitches from one end to the other.

As for "The Avengers: Infinity War", despite the world needing a reality check that despite electric cars, (and people in many sections of the world don't even have cars), they still breed like rabbits which have been genetically modified to include DNA from crab lice, it was still pretty damned depressing.

As for "Black Panther", if I heard, "I'd rather have drowned jumping off the ships, than serve as a slave" one more time, I'd have shut it off. Wow, I'll bet Marvel mined a lot of gold from that dark place.

So, give me Deadpool, with all his profanity. I'd laugh along with that any day of the week, before watching African American propaganda laced trash, and the gloom and doom of "Infinity War".

As for Disney's infantile crap like, "A Wrinkle in Time", if Apple's childish nonsense is anything like that, I won't have to suffer any guilt for not touching it with some iSheep's ten foot pole.

At least I have a high standard.
Sez you...:p

Well Cliff, I'm told that Jesus' best friends were the salt of the earth, harlots, gypsies, tramps , and thieves.

If you'd rather endure something like, "A wrinkle in Time", with its four times life size Orca Winfrey dressed in an silver plated outfit that would make Cleopatra envious, that's your prerogative.

But me, I hear "the N word" constantly, as well as every conceivable profanity which accompanies it in modern "gansta rap", throughout my life. If a couple of dirty jokes are off putting to you, make sure you're subscribed to a Christian radio streaming service, or risk exposure to real life.

Or as I think the bible says, "if thine eye offends thee, pluck it out". And as I'm saying, "if thine ear offends thee, put a cork in it".

Tell that to a judge in their court room. I will change my stance as soon as a judge changes their stance.

Better yet I will change my stance just as soon as the masses deem vulgar language, violence, and sexual behavior is fit for children to witness/mimic.
