Audio Device Disappeared

Hi, everyone. I am new to this forum. I have spent the past week with computer issues that I haven't had since my Atari. But the unresolved issue is that the audio device has disappeared from my Dell 1505 laptop. No virus, just...gone. The icon is gone and the audio says "no audio device". I have spent three hours with Microsoft (XP) and they concluded that the software was ok. I tried to download new Dell audio drivers, three times, and then convinced Dell to take control of my computer and try to determine if it was a hardware issue. After 2 hours, Dell says it is not the hardware. They blamed McAfee. So McAfee tries to find the problem and they conclude it is not McAfee. So, what else can I try?

Get into the Control Panel, System, Device Manager and remove the audio device listed. Restart the computer and see if Windows reinstalls the audio device properly
