As a newbie to video editing in general, I would like to digitally archive my aging collection of rather poor but personally valuable VHS recordings. For a variety of reasons I've decided the best way is by using a standalone VHS-DVD deck to dub the tapes directly onto discs. However, I am concerned that this may lead to difficulty in editing the content later on (editing on the fly is not a current option for me).
Is there software that will do basic (and decent) editing of existing MPEG-2 files, mostly just trimming to delete unwanted content and reassembling of clips? Or do I need to stick with a costly and unwieldy DV format?
Thanks for any advice...
