Bing reportedly still has a higher success rate than Google

Bing achieved the highest success rate in December 2010: 81 percent. Google meanwhile achieved a success rate of 65 percent, up 1 percent over the previous month, according to Experian Hitwise.

A successful search is defined as one where the user ends up visiting a website, as opposed to clicking back or searching again with a new query. Both Google and Bing offer quick answers directly in their search results, which sometimes makes it unnecessary to click a link, but we doubt those searches account for anywhere between 19 to 35 percent.

The share of unsuccessful searches shows how much both search engines can still improve their result pages to ensure that users are finding the information they are seeking. Microsoft has said before that one of the reasons it insists on competing with Google is because search is not solved.

Google accounted for 69.67 percent of all US searches conducted in the four weeks ending January 1, 2011. Bing-powered search received 25.77 percent of searches for the month. Breaking that last number down, Yahoo accounted for 15.17 percent while Bing had 10.60 percent. The remaining 70 search engines tracked by Hitwise accounted for 4.57 percent of US searches.

I accidentally clicked on Bing the other day, so you can roughly take about 20% off that for real terms.

Google will rule this sector for a long time to come.

Well they did manage to replace several apps to lead to bing, my Chrome went to bing the other day, dont know why, but it was quickly replaced back to Skyne... Google.

I keep trying Bing. I want to like it, but the results just aren't what I want.

Google isn't perfect either, but in some (emphasis on some) of the searches I perform, Google gives me the results I want. I've yet to really experience Bing having better results for Google and Google always has more results for what I'm looking, despite Bing's claims of many billions of pages indexed.

The numbers are pretty deceiving, sometimes I go to a website and some bing comes up.
Microsoft is paying companies to use bing to get their numbers up. That is OK, they have lots of money. If I see a product advertised when bing pops up I will not buy it, so I hope that is what the advertisers are going for. Alienate the customers, good job!

To be honest, I have made the switch to Bing, at home and at work. I find greater success using Bing, so I guess I contributed to the numbers in this report. It took a while of going back and forth between the two, but I'm happy with Bing. Google has fallen a bit behind, in my eyes.

My thoughts:
Bing.com:
Cleanliness- Nice, neat homepage, sometimes scattered with obligatory references to its own good doing.

Response time- In todays modern world we record in milli and nano seconds, so this is hardly a factor in choice. Sometimes a little slower refreshing pages because of ads.

Relevant Results- More text crawlers than anything. Has trouble choosing between pages with words that are actually in titles and pages with words that are search texts.

Image- It does not help Bing to the fact that its mother/father is Microsoft. I also feel silly when I say Bing and I do not feel that is the adequate sound for finding exactly what you are looking for. It would be more the sound of Link in Zelda opening a chest.

Google.com:

Cleanliness- Always clean and bright, with a big search bar right in the middle. Nothing to distract me from what I'm really searching for.

Response Time- Usually very fast, results up top.

Relevant Results- Usually I find what I need on the first page sometimes at the top of the page. Sometimes I resort to using modifers to narrow results, in either case I believe google has more relevants results upon first query.

Image- A household name and synonymous for everything information. Ir-respectable of standing with the internet community at large, google is a brand name that has not had many fallouts so there is not much bad to say about google in a public view.

Conclusion:
Have you ever told anyone to "Just Bing It"? No, I didn't think so. Its hard to dismiss the monster that is Microsoft and their infinitely deep pockets. When MS get behind something it is a good bet it will be around for a while. Google has a cult like following that may not be ebbed for quite some time.
What is the secret to Googles success? Give away everything for free and people will pay attention.

hajaja that' really a LIE!!, I've been trying Bing for a long time and I never get the result im looking for, and that apart from the few result, if you are looking for pictures, Dond dream with it, That thing never get what you are looking....

While on the other side if you cant find what you are looking on the first's 2 pages of google search you will probably not going to find it on this side of the planet, you will have to go google.jn or something like that.

Bing 80% of sucess... sounds like a bad joke, and yahoo over google?? Oh wait those are microsoft stuff.. O.O No way dont... play me! OMG it's True!!

Considering the insane number of people that use Google compared to Bing, the numbers are very very misleading.

The studied was based on 10 million users, google accounts for ~70% of searched whilst Bing is ~11% (see article), that's googles 7 million compared to bing's 1.1 million

I find when I try bing (off and on) Google still appears to have the search results I'm looking for personally.

I use Google (still find it gives me better results) but I've switched the kids to Bing - Google does not do a good enough job of filtering porn via it's image search (even with safe search switched on).

Folks,

Have you checked out shopping on Bing?

Or Bing maps?

Or voice based search?

In my opinion, It always was better than Google on aesthetics, presentation and usability. Hard to believe it , but Now it is beating it on success rate !

Why would they even look at Google data (albeit picked up from users) ?
