Black Screen

I tried to hook my computer monitor up to dual monitors. I run Windows XP Home edition. i wanted to split the screen from my computer to the tv. it still wants to send the signal to the tv, but it does not show up on the tv or monitor. it will boot up on the monitor then it goes black (power sleep mode). It's a brand new monitor so it isn't that. Is there a way i can reset the video card or do i need to get a new one?
