two days ago, i turned my copmuter on and left the room for a few mins. i came back, woke it up from sleep mode, and then 2 mins later it just turned off by it self.. i turned it back on and now all i get is the blinking underscore at topleft corner.. i did nothing to my computer to make it do this.. what can i do to fix?

Which operating system?
If you have a current backup I would suggest booting with the OS disc and going to the recovery console. If you have XP, run chkdsk and see if that fixes it. If you have something newer there should be some options for recovery when you boot from the CD/DVD.
