Boot problems after initial boot screen

  1. So my friend tried to boot his PC this morning. It would show the initial boot screen, but when it starts to boot the HDD the screen goes blank.
I have tried using the CD to boot the PC and it works just fine. I moved the hard drive to another computer and it still goes blank after the initial boot screen.
I attempted to boot Windows in safe mode by using the F8 key. The choices screen did show up, but when I chose the safe mode and pressed enter the screen went blank. Done that on both computers.
The OS is Windows XP home edition. Using one monitor for both PCs (he only has one). His usual PC is an old DELL and the other PC is one I built about 3 years ago.

    Anyone got any ideas?
