Booting from Windows XP disk, how do I boot from hard disk again?

I shipped my computer and after three months have finally booted it up. I got the message "boot disk error, insert system CD and restart" or something similar.

OK so i went into BIOS and changed the boot priority to CD ROM first, Hard Disk second.

Restarted and it booted up ok.

So once i updated a few things I restarted and while restarting entered BIOS and changed Boot priority back to Hard Disk, (hoping it would magically be reinstated or something i dunno about these things)

But the computer will still not boot from hard disk.

Where do i go from here???

cheers

OK now i want to run the checkdisk from recovery console but i cant remember my password (i set this up about 5 years ago) any options for me there??

Also, as i am not a computer tech, how can i find if any cables are loose or off. Inside the computer there are many loose cables but there always has been. he cables from the disks to the mobo seem ok.
