BSOD on XP Pro Thinkpad T42

Any help greatly appreciated ....

Not sure what the problem is, so I'll be as thourogh as possible. There may be some red herrings in here, but who knows ...

When I close the screen on the laptop, it typically goes into standby mode. but 2 weeks ago, after being screen closed and (I thought) in standby, I pulled it out of the case after 40 minutes in it, and the fan was going and the computer was warm (fan had no where to exhaust to while in the case).

More recently, in the last week, I have twice gotten the BSOD and then reboot. I have checked the disk, and there are no errors or bad sectors. I have attached a zip of the minidumps from the two said crashes. Adding to the weirdness, as I was hunting around for the dump files last night, Norton Anti Virus said it had found, and deleted, a virus called Trojan.Dropper.

Source: C:\WINDOWS\iun6002.exe

I have not had a virus in years ... haven't gotten any warnings from Zone Alarm that have been out of the ordinary. I was using an open wireless network at a hotel when I had the first problem of the computer not going into standby.

So I don't know if the computer getting hotter than usual caused problems, or if it's a software problem, or a virus problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last 48 hours it's been running fine, but I hate not knowing what's going on!

Your crashes may have multiple culprits. You supply two minidump. One minidump crashes with memory corruption and one dump crashes due to faulty motherboad. You also install Zonealarm which is a unstable software.

Suggestion
1. Check the temperature of the CPU and make sure that it is not overheat
2. Reseat the memory stick to another memory slot
3. Downclock the ram
4. Clean the dust inside the computer case
5. Make sure that the ram is compatible to the motherboard

I will expect it will still crash because of the faulty m/b but it will be less frequent if the memory problem is resolved.

Thanks CPC2004.

Sounds like you don't like Zone Alarm - do you suggest an alternative?

I'll reseat the memory .... no more crashes yet ....
