Building new computer with external dvd drive?

  1. Greetings. I'm going to build my first computer for the first time and I was wondering if I can get by with just an external dvd drive instead of an internal one? I've only had the thing for 2 months so it's still practically new. Thanks in advance!

Yes, probably. The BIOS' of most, if not all, late model motherboards support booting from an external optical drive so you will be able to install an operating system from it. I've done it with a couple of my Gigabyte boards just to see if I could. It wouldn't hurt to check the manual of the motherboard you are considering just to be sure you have that option.
