Can I make an external USB HDD pretend it's a USB pen drive?

Hi, This is possibly me being blonde, but can I make my external USB powered hard drive act like a USB pen drive, so that I can use it on my tv? I bought a 640Gb drive thinking I could plug it in but it says it doesn't accept drives, just the usual memory stick type of device.

Is it possible to get the drive to pretend to be something else?

Hi, My tv is a Sanyo (can't remember the model offhand) but this happens in my car as well, and that was the main reason I got the HD. It's my fault for not reading the car manual sooner that says it won't accept USB hard drives, just memory sticks! I just didn't know if there was a way to make the HD think it's a memory stick so my car will use it!

The controller firmware determines the type of USB media you have.

The firmware is typically not changeable, although a handful of USB thumb drives support flipping a bit which controls what type of removable media it appears as (although this still wouldn't help you).

As long as your device doesn't understand how to talk to your external hard drive's USB controller, then there is no chance of this working. :-(
