My Emachine broke down(motherboard died). I have an HP, I dont know what model, but I was wondering if I can use the emachines hard drive and add it to the hp pc to retrieve my files from it.
Please reply and thanks to the ones that do

Certainly......

The technique for doing so will vary slightly whether it' an IDE drive (80 wire 2" wide ribbon cable) or a SATA drive (much smaller cable).

The Emachine drive (If it's IDE) must be installed as a slave. This is the center connector on the ribbon cable, and a jumper on the back of the drive must also be moved. A SATA drive would be plugged into any open SATA port, but can at times need to be taken out of the host computer's boot order. This would be accomplished in BIOS. Some Emachine manuals actually have pictorial instructions for changing a drive, so you might want to familiarize yourself with the process before you try it for real.

Drive manufacturers websites can help you with tutorials also, so here's a couple to get you started. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/ and/or http://www.westerndigital.com/en/index.asp?Language=en
