Can my PC handle more RAM?

Hey,

I currently have DDR2 1GB RAM (2 x 512MB) and a friend of mine is willing to give me he's DDR2 4GB because I don't have a peny to my name, what I'd like to know is if my PC is capable of handling the RAM of my friend.

P.S. I will add the full detail of my friend's RAM later if necessary, but perhaps you can already see if I can or can't run any kind DDR2 4GB RAM with the pictures below:

Are you running 32bit or 64bit OS. Because IRC there is a limit on 32bit distributions. Something like 2.5GB will only be recognized. But if running 64bit that isn't a issue. Also, You should be fine running his sticks. Just remove yours and pop his in.
 
Hey there!
You've posted you motherboard's specs, not CPU's. :D Can't tell much from that.
If it's a 64-bit CPU (I.e. with a x86_64 instruction set) running a 64-bit OS, it can handle it. Piece of cake. ;)
But since the CPU-Z version says x32, so I don't think you have a 64-bit OS, else you would have had x64 in the version.
If you are unsure, go to the "About" tab in CPU-Z, click "Save report as .txt", and attach the file here in your post.

BUT!
Good news -
If you enable PAE on a x32 OS, you can use all that RAM effectively without hitting the 3GB barrier before I/O allocation! (Means you'll get 3.5~3.75 GB instead of 3 GB).

According to the ECS website, your motherboard supports

2 x 240-pin DDR2 DIMM socket support up to 4 GB
Support DDR2 667/533/400 DDR2 SDRAM

So, as long as your friend's ram is 2x 2gb sticks at any of the speeds listed, your hardware should support it.

Here's how to enable PAE (which is most advisable since you have XP):
From Desktop:
Windows orb key+R (for "Run") > msconfig > hit Enter > "Advanced" tab > PAE support > Select "Force enable" > OK > Close all windows
To make sure it worked:
Run > cmd > hit Enter > BCDEdit /set PAE ForceEnable > hit Enter > should give an error-free output > close all windows.
Now, shut down your system, install the new RAM modules/sticks, boot up. Go to System properties, and check what's the System Memory showing as. If there are any errors or BSOD, post back here so we can troubleshoot it by MemTest.

Enjoy the additional RAM!

I think my edit button doesn't appear if I enter comments to news articles from the homepage but if I go to the threads in the Forum it appears there.
 
Sorry bros but I just have to...if you are running 32-bit Windows then your computer will only recognize ~3.2Gb of that 4Gb ram...and not 2.5Gb or 3.5-3.75Gb...
Or yeah, if you have 32-bit Windows 7 then it will say that you have 4Gb installed but then it also says that it can only use 3.2Gb.
 
Yes, DjKraid, which is why we have PAE and other workarounds. There is the 3GB barrier on 32-bit then too, but I've seen it work for many, some of which even use 6GB of RAM in x32!

My friend is getting a brand new PC, the computer will arrive maybe next monday after that he will try to send the RAM to me from Sweden to Spain which according to him could take 3 weeks.

He might also send he's CPU, but I'll start a new thread to see if it's compatible or not.
 
I have FINALLY received the 4 GB RAM (2 x 2GB) but after running a test on System Requirements Lab it said I have 2.1 GB, is there anyway to get the full 4 GB without having to buy new stuff or blowing up my PC?
 
Ah, there's the problem.
32-bit can only address upto 4GB theoretically, but can actually use significantly less than that, due to I/O allocation and other reservations.
Since your processor and other hardware support 64-bit (indicated by a "Compatible with Windows 7/Vista" logo), you may install it, but bear in mind you'll have to make a clean install, and will lose data if not backed-up.
Do you wish to go ahead with the 64-bit installation? :)
 
Well last time I tried changing something with my OS (converting Vista to Windows 7) my whole laptop HDD became corrupted and it became completely useless, I'm not sure about messing about with my OS atm. :confused:

P.S. A friend told me that my motherboard was designed to run 32-bit.
 
Haha, surely it's up to you to make the choice! :D
If your motherboard box has a Compatible with Windows Vista/7 sticker on it, it means it can run both 32-bit and 64-bit.
64-bit has backward-compatibility to an extent with 32-bit.
To be sure, to check for compatibility, here you go: MS Compatibility Assistant.
Just search for you mobo and see if it's compatible.

I couldn't find my Motherboard on that website, but I'll check for a sticker on my Motherboard once I get past my lazyness! :D

Looking at the manufacturers pages for your motherboard, there are several clues pointing to the fact your motherboard was designed for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.
  • Clue 1 - Memory noted in red stating that only 4GB will be usable with a 32-bit operating system.
  • Clue 2 - Looking at driver downloads there are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of XP, Server 2003, and Vista.
  • Clue 3 - 64-bit CPU's listed in the support list.
On a final note:
Windows 7 may not have the motherboard listed as being supported. However there are Vista drivers available for your motherboard. You can use Windows Vista drivers if there is not Windows 7 drivers available. Just remember to match the driver bit version with the operating systems bit version (64-bit drivers for 64-bit OS).​
