I just started on this project 2 days ago, and so far have generated about 680 points, but my stats aren't updating on the team page, or anywhere else for that matter - any ideas?

On another note - I've found the following for caching work units (via the grid.org forums) Has anybody come accross this? http://udmon.sourceforge.net/

and a page full of third party apps... http://forum.grid.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=8790

I was unable to enter any team's page, probably those have been removed now that the project was complete. I did take this screenshot though (see attachment - TechSpot Team ranked #451 all time).

I haven't yet figured out...what exactly is this? Is it just that you're donating your computer for research on all this stuff?

It is a distributed computing project. There are many like this. One of the oldest is SETI. Techspot used to have a distributed computing forum, but it was seldom used.

Distributed computing means donating unused clock cycles on your computer to process information that is then sent to a central data bank. By and large these these programs are scientific in nature. With DC you can achieve greater computational power than 1 giant mainframe.

Millions of small computers can process greater info than 1 or two giant computers.

We still have a DC forum, its just a subforum now, and it is containing this thread.

In my opinion I think 2 things killed off the popularity of it around here. 1 was seti going from its own standalone small client, to this BOINC crap they have now, and the 2nd reason is we've had a wave of members that focus on cooling so much they nearly crap their pants if they see a CPU temperature above 40C.
