Cannot run malware bytes after installing

I think I have a serious virus and/or malware on my deskstop PC. I cannot update windows vista 32bit, windows defender or any antivirus I install on the computer. I tried to follow the 8 step removal process but I malware bytes will not launch after installation. I have run out of ideas on how to clean up my PC. reformating and reinstalling is not something i want to do as i have a lot of important information on the computer.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try running the antispyware and antivirus software in <SAFE MODE> after repeatedly depressing the <F8> key once per second for 30 seconds.

i did that and still doesn't work. i still cannot run any virus removal programs in safe mode

rename the executable from mbam.exe to mb.exe or anything differerent. then run directly instead of from shortcut.
