Can't connect to the Internet?

Over and over again we see posts like
I ran a boot time scan with Avast and once it had finished and my PC had restarted my connection was fine,but I could not connect to the internet? I have two computers,one laptop (which I am on right now) and a PC which are both using wireless. Can someone help me out please as I am clueless to what to do?

The basic facts are
  • the proper drivers are not installed - - OR
  • IPv6 is getting in the way
The simple/cheap routers we use at home are (frankly) brain-dead regarding IPv6 --
google that for yourself.

*IF* ipconfig /all shows
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::505d:1920:1037:529f%11
Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.X.Y

see this post to disable IPv6

Interesting, and I know the thread you are quoting from. After IPv6 was disabled by the OP the wireless device has become disabled. What would be good to know is what Avast is disabling or removing that causes the problem. Has there been a recent update to Avast that has caused this? A System Restore should fix it. (I should have thought of suggesting that in the thread)

Why did it work before the Avast scan and now it doesn't? Find the answer to this and the problem will be easily solved.

There doesn't appear to be any explanation as to why Avast is causing this problem with some people but I found a thread which includes links for WinXP, 7 and Vista with instructions to reset Winsock and this seems to do the trick. Also turning off the Avast Web Shield allows internet connection to resume.

Disable Avast Web Shield or run these fixes.
